Excellent storytelling and an understanding of motive is at the heart of both UX design and filmmaking. Before deciding to transition to UX design, I was a producer at a film company.

In film, the sound design, lighting, set up of the shot, script, crew, set design, wardrobe, and talent must create something cohesive: each aspect advances the client’s or director’s goal. In the same way, every tiny aspect of UX design is wrapped up in achieving a singular goal and purpose.

I was lucky enough to work with a fantastic team of directors, editors, and sound designers at Distant Moon. Here are some screen grabs from some of my favorite projects.

My Values

At the heart of every creative work is a good story.

Whether we were creating online courses, succinct interviews, or branded ads, we made sure that a good story was at the very heart of every creative work.

Design is about synergy.

Everything must work together visually to create something consistent and coherent.

Excellent work requires a team of capable people.

From the director of photography, to the director, to the crew, to the actors, to the client, to the sound designers and editors, excellent teammates produced fantastic work again and again.

Crafting a compelling experience with sets made from scratch

While designing sets for online courses, we found that viewers loved our classroom sets, in which they felt as though they were talking with the professor after class. We began creating sets that looked like professors’ offices, so that viewers could imagine meeting with the professor during office hours.

Viewers loved our sets so much that they asked to see them when visiting campus.

But the sets no longer existed. Each set is created and then disassembled in a basement on campus, with a backdrop to suggest the outside and artificial lighting to suggest daylight.
